Conversion funnels that show where visitors give up

Put the steps of your purchase or enquiry in a row and see how many visitors make it to the next one — and where the others went instead. From a page, a URL pattern or an event, also from your server.

What it is for

What it helps you with

  1. 01

    Find the leak

One number for every step shows where the most visitors give up — the place where a change brings the most.

  2. 02

    See where they went

Not only how many left, but where to: back to the products, to the pricing, or away from the site.

  3. 03

    Compare channels and devices

The same funnel by channel and device tells whether the problem is a campaign, phones or the page itself.

Every step with its drop

Two to eight steps — a page, a pattern with * or an event — closed or open, optionally directly one after another. Each step shows how many continued and how many left.

The conversions of the site and the visitor’s path from a pageview to a goal sit one section away, with the same period and filters.

In detail

How it works under the hood

Steps your way

A step is a page by its exact path, a group of pages with * (such as /products/*/) or an event: a click on a key button, a submitted form or an order sent by your server. Two to eight steps make a funnel. A closed funnel counts only visits that started at the first step, an open one lets visitors enter at any step.

One visit, one day

A funnel follows one visit. Because the fingerprint changes every day, a purchase decided over several days shows as separate visits — the price of measuring without cookies, and the reason a funnel never follows a person across days.

Where they went and how long it took

For every step Visitics keeps where the visitors who did not continue went instead and how long the step took, as a histogram: the median is exact to the minute. Every step is also counted by channel and device.

Fast on big sites

Every finished day is processed once at night and kept as a summary; only today is computed from the raw events. With a million events in 30 days a funnel opens in about a tenth of a second, and a new funnel fills the last 30 days at once.

Everything it does

Everything in Funnels

  • 2 to 8 steps: a page by its path, a pattern with * or an event
  • Closed funnels (only visits that started at step 1) or open ones (entering anywhere)
  • “Directly one after another” when nothing may come between two steps
  • The drop between the steps and the share that reached the end
  • Where the visitors who left went instead
  • The median time between the steps
  • A breakdown by channel and device; the AI analyst reads your funnels too

Questions

Questions about Funnels

What is a step?

A page by its path (/checkout/), a pattern of pages (/products/*/) or an event — a click on a key button, a sent form or an order from your server.

What does “one visit” mean for a funnel?

A funnel follows one visit within a day, because the fingerprint of a visitor changes daily. A purchase decided over several days shows as separate visits.

Does a new funnel work with older data?

Yes, as far back as the raw records of visits go (30 days): a new funnel shows those days at once, and from then on every day is kept for the history of your plan.

How many funnels can I have?

It depends on the plan — see the table above. Funnels are not part of the free Nova plan.

Can a funnel count orders from my server?

Yes. An event sent from your server — through the API or the order event of the shop plugins — can be a step like any other, so orders count even when a script in the browser is blocked.

Why does a funnel show fewer visits than the page?

A closed funnel counts only visits that started at its first step, and “directly one after another” drops visits with another page in between. An open funnel without that option is the widest view.
